Dear Reader,
As always, some of these pieces originated as scraps or ideas, and have been edited or re-envisioned since their original conception. Some were only a stanza, a verse, a chorus, or refrain; some had different words or different moods, or were simply left as notes or ideas. Looking back on these unfinished works is something I do quite often, either because I like the melody or the context, or because I’m searching for inspiration, and it thrills and excites me how often an old piece can spark up a whole new meaning—perhaps one that I had been searching for, which is suddenly very clear, having lived another ten years in-between a work’s birth and finalization.
Each section in this book is dedicated to a specific chunk of time in my life, and to the person or people within each period, whom I have loved, swooned over, lived with, or created indissoluble bonds with. The pieces in this collection were written for, inspired by, or (in the case of finalizing some of those scraps) re-inspired by these people.
That being said… I have learned quite a lot about love from each of these periods and persons in my life, one thing being that:
Love is an amazing affliction with an array of side-effects. Some make you feel great, while others can make you feel trapped or hopeless.
I really hope you’ll enjoy sharing this journey with me, spanning over thirteen years. If love has taught me anything else of importance, it’s that the feelings that it manifests help us grow and practice, so that we may hopefully be able to love—not just others—but also ourselves, with the full capacities of our hearts. It might take some years, but “if not to learn, what good’s time?”
♥
